THINK SPRING!
Valerian is a perennial plant, native to Europe and parts of Asia and now has been naturalized in North America. It grows in meadows and woodlands, within moist and temperate climates. This plant can grow up to two meters high and produce small clusters of white and pink flowers, that have a sweet pleasant smell as opposed to the roots which are not so pleasantly smelling.
Despite its strong odor, Valerian root has been used since the times of ancient Greece and also within traditional European folk medicine. Catnip isn't the only plant that cats find attractive- Valerian also draws in cats, and rats as well. It is said that the Pied Piper of Hamelin used Valerian to attract the rates when luring them out of town to prevent possible plague outbreaks.
Today Valerian is known to be a potent nervine with strong tranquilizing effects. It helps treat insomnia as well as mild aches and pains and a plethora of other nervous system conditions. Although it has strong tranquilizing effects sometimes certain people take it and have the opposite effect where it makes them wide awake and stimulated.
Precautions: Not recommended for people with hot disorders like high strung, nervousness or people who are excitable. Do not use it during the day if you are driving or operating heavy machinery*
We like to use dried Valerian Root in an alcohol based tincture to help with insomnia, anxiety and stress.
